Camera Movements - Zone of Good Definition

If we focus on a particular point in the scene we can conceptualize a cylindrical Zone of Good definition in which the film or sensor can be placed to achieve acceptable results.

The diameter of the Zone is determined by:

1. The lens manufacturer in terms of the coverage the lens has, without Aberrations degrading the image beyond the acceptable norm.

2. The depth of this cylinder is determined by the the size of the maximum acceptable Circle of Confusion (Fuzzy Blob)

If the image is brought to sharp focus on the Film or Sensor surface which becomes the PPF and then the the sensor is moved forward, back or rotated the point will become a Fuzzy Blob of increasing size the further it is moved from the PPF. When the Blob has increased in size sufficent that it no longer appears as a sharp point in the enlarged image it would be considered to have exceeded its Circle of Confusion Limit.
