The above photograph was taken from a canal boat at the Castlefield end of the town where in AD 79 the Romans built a settlement named Mamucium. We had just emerged through the lock gates that can be seen under Castle St Bridge
The Canal system built at the end of the 18th century is now used for 'pleasure' at this point the Railway and Metro run alongside unfortunately no Trains or Metrolink Trams were running as we passed.
The Iconic 170m high Beetham Tower completed in 2006 towers over this historic part of Manchester. It is the highest residential building in Europe the Manchester Hilton occupies the first 23 floors the rest of the 47 floors are taken up with luxury apartments and penthouses the towers architect Ian Simpson lives in a penthouse occupying the top two floors.
